Porlock residents are being asked for their views on an ambitious scheme which would create a largely-hidden wild-life haven in the middle of the village.

Under the scheme, being organised by the parish council, the orchard and green space next to the Community Centre could be massively developed to include a wildlife pond, an outdoor classroom and nature discovery areas.

A parish council spokesperson said the proposals were currently at the consultation stage and residents were invited to view the emerging ideas, ask questions and share feedback at Porlock Community Library in the Old School Centre before any decisions were made.

The views of the community on the project will be considered by the parish council at a future monthly meeting.

The spokesperson added: “The space is already full of character and has all the ingredients to become a welcoming destination for families, residents, visitors, schools and community groups.”

Ideas already being considered include a wildlife and nature discovery area, a community garden and picnic destination, an outdoor classroom for local schools and groups, a place for relaxation, learning and family activities and a visitor attraction celebrating Porlock’s natural heritage.

The site already contains a variety of fruit trees, and seasonal wild flowers, and the historic cider press building, vintage farm cart, old plough, picnic benches and seating areas would all contribute to the charm of the new secret haven.

A statement from the parish council said: “Before any scheme can move forward, practical issues would need to be explored carefully to understand how the site could be made safer and easier to enjoy”.

Safety measures considered necessary for the scheme include improving uneven slopes, hazardous access and entrances and steep sets of steps.

“Many of the fruit trees are in need of specialist pruning and restoration and existing shrubs, trees and heritage features would also benefit from conservation and enhancement”.

The statement added: “The consultation is intended to explore whether the area could be managed in a way that supports wildlife, celebrates Porlock’s natural heritage and gives people of all ages more opportunities to visit, learn, relax and explore this very special place.

“This is a community consultation and local voices will help shape what happens next. Residents are encouraged to share their views, ask questions, suggest ideas and comment on whether the orchard should be developed further.”

Recent input includes suggestions that the area could become a hub for community work days, wildlife talks and demonstrations, family nature events and educational workshops

The project would also offer opportunities for St Dubricius School and other local groups. A wildlife pond and enhanced orchard would provide an outdoor learning environment where children could study habitats and ecosystems, learn about insects, amphibians and birds and explore biodiversity and conservation.

Artist’s sketches of how the project could develop are on view at Porlock Community Library in the Old School Centre but the next steps will depend on consultation feedback, practical assessments, safety considerations and future decisions.
