THE sun shone, the crowds came in droves and the money poured in to Porlock's annual country fair last Sunday.

Organisers declared the event in the village recreation ground one of the best, raising a bumper amount - at least £4,000.

With activities and entertainment on offer ranging from archery and children's races to a classic car display and performances from the West Somerset Morris Men, there was something for all ages and all tastes.

A family fun dog show (pictured below) proved to be one of the most popular attractions, followed closely by the pull of the beer tent.

A near mutiny was on the cards when the beer barrels ran dry in the early afternoon but top-up supplies from a local pub saved the day.

Recreation ground committee chairman Keith Jacobs said: "It was an absolutely brilliant day.

"We were really lucky with the weather, which was nice and hot, and hundreds of people turned out to enjoy themselves.

"We had traditional country-style games and it was lovely."

The fair had to be moved from its usual July date last year after high winds blew away three marquees put up for the event shortly before it was due to be held.

But organisers decided to keep the fixture in August after it attracted more punters.

The fair was opened by local GP Dr Ian Kelham, who arrived at the event in a Lanchester car driven and owned by Stephen Johns from the Exmoor Classic Car Collection Museum in Porlock (above).

The money raised will kick-start a project to refurbish the children's playground in the recreation ground, which needs a range of new equipment.
