PORLOCK Community Orchard and Porlock Visitor Centre, is becoming an autumn half-term fixture.

And last Sunday’s apple day has been hailed as yet another success – not least because of the quality of the freshly-pressed juice.

An ever growing number of households in the area have taken the opportunity afforded by Porlock Apple Day to create their own stores of pasteurised apple juice.

Some bring along their own apples, others rent equipment from the community orchard and many attend the series of pressing days organised by the orchard group.

“It seems that the number of people interested in the wide range of apple varieties that are available locally is growing,” said group chairman Jeff Cox.

“I think that we were able to surprise many of our visitors with the differences in tastes and appearances of apple juice.

“Over 12 different varieties were available for tasting, ranging from the well known Bramley and Lord Derby to the less well known Kidd’s Orange Red, Ashmead’s Kernel and Sops in Wine.”
