DANESFIELD Community Middle School, in Williton, has won the top two prizes - presented by poet laureate Andrew Motion - in the Thresher Awards regional poetry competition.
The 20 year six pupils who entered the competition were judged to have created the best selection of poems overall and 11-year-old Katy Foster, pictured on the left with Rosa Lewis and Michael Hutchinson, won the individual prize for her poem 'Tiger'.
The school won £500 and Katy received a selection of books and a 25 voucher - and many of the entries will be published in a book entitled Splattered Rainbow.
The Threshold scheme arranges for schools that have registered to participate to have their own writing workshops run by recognised writers. Every pupil who attends the workshop earns a certificate and the youngsters, who are of primary school age, are then invited to enter the competition.
The scheme, which is open to schools in Somerset, North Somerset and Bristol, was founded seven years ago by Lady Cassidi from South Somerset.
She said: "The aim is to stimulate the youngsters into creating imaginative writing. This opens up a whole new world for them and creates an interest in English language, improving the child's overall academic work as well."
This year's competition was judged by Professor Motion who handed out the prizes together with BBC's head of drama, John Tyderman.
Head of English at Danesfield, Sharon Bowden said: "The real benefit was having a writer come to work in school with the children. I was very proud that they did so well."
County Cllr Pauline Clarke, who has responsibility for education and attended the awards ceremony, said: "This school did exceptionally well.
"The youngsters were competing against pupils from schools in three education authorities. For them to come away with both top prizes is absolutely marvellous."
