PUBLIC notices cover a range of applications, from licensing applications for liqueur or entertainment to planning applications, roadworks and other works.
Their intention is to inform communities of the latest plans in their area and such applications are considered for approval or refusal by local authorities.
Here are some of the latest applications submitted to Somerset Council:
A planning application has been submitted for retrospective planning permission on works to repair a damaged roof on a listed building.
The application is applying for the retention of works already carried out on the roof at 2 Church Street, Wiveliscombe.
The work to the roof was in response to extensive storm damage, the statement says, undertaken by contractors who had already delivered roofing work in the same street with excellent results.
In his submitted planning statement, the owner, Mr N. Turner stated: “The work was not initially undertaken as a matter of maintenance but as an emergency repair to a badly damaged roof.
“I did not intend to ignore the listed status of the building as I checked on the planning portal and genuinely believed that as I wasn’t ‘altering or extending in anyway that altered the character of the building or demolishing any part of it’ I did not require permission.
“I now understand that I was wrong in this conclusion however I have undertaken in good faith to use suitable materials, replacing less appropriate modern synthetic tiles with more attractive natural slate even though they were considerably more expensive.”
Replacing the original synthetic tiles on the old roof with natural slate, he states “is far more attractive and appropriate to the buildings age.”
He added: “I believe that the work was carried out to a very high standard and the finished product enhances the property and the immediate surroundings.”
His heritage statement part of the application added: “I hope that it can be seen that there is no perceptible change to the character of the building other than it looks considerably tidier and the materials used are more appropriate and attractive. Also the work will contribute to preservation of this building for many years.”
The works were completed in August 2025 on the grade II listed building. A decision date has been set for June 3, 2026.
