PLANS for a 350-home development in Williton will be revealed on Wednesday (November 20) when residents will be asked for their views on what would be the village’s biggest new housing scheme.

The proposed development is on Wyndham Estates land to the west of the community hospital and north of the former Mamsey House nursing home.

The estate is working with planning consulants Savills on proposals which, if approved by Somerset West and Taunton Council planners, will include a wide variety of dwellings and affordable homes.

The greenfield site is close to Battlegore Barrows cemetery, a neolithic and Bronze Age burial ground which is scheduled as an ancient monument, but a Savills spokesman said that any scheme would include “improved public access and understanding” of the site.

He added that the developers were anxious to get residents’ views and feedback before the submission of a planning application.

Plans were “still emerging” for the development but they would include new pedestrian and cycle links with Williton and high-quality open space and play areas.

Savills planning team director Peter Grubb told the Free Press yesterday (Thursday): “As part of a wider strategy to meeting housing and economic need, three sites round Williton were adopted into the West Somerset Local Plan in 2016.

“We are working with the Wyndham Estate on a proposed development of one of these sites to the west of the village and we are keen to involve the local community in the proposals.

“We invite anyone who is interested in finding out more to attend our exhibition on Wednesday. It will be an opportunity to view and provide feedback and suggestions on the emerging plans.

The consultation on November 20 is in the Williton Parish Council office in Killick Way from 4pm to 7pm.
