A PETITION to save Minehead’s only nightclub was launched online this week after it was announced that Lloyds No1 Bar, attached to J D Wetherspoons’ Duke of Wellington pub, will close after New Year’s Eve.

A popular late-night venue on Fridays and Saturdays, the club will close “as the result of a commercial decision”, according to a Wetherspoons’ spokesman.

“There will be no staff losses and it will have no effect on the main pub which will remain open and trading as normal,” he said.

On Thursday, over 250 people had signed the online petition urging Wetherspoons to keep the nightspot open.

Comments ranged from “This will kill Minehead nightlife or what’s left of it” to “We should be improving the town’s nightife, not taking more away from it”.
