The local authority in charge of firefighting in south Somerset has urged members of the public to play their part during forthcoming industrial action.
Residents have been urged to carefully study advice and information that will be sent to them in the near future.
Somerset County Council expects that only nine of the county's 24 fire stations would remain operational during industrial action. The nine stations had not been named at the time of going to press, but it is understood that Yeovil, for example, will be completely shut.
A council spokesperson said: "This action will leave substantial areas of Somerset with fire and rescue cover provided by a very limited military support.
"Many rural areas will be waiting for some considerable time for the attendance of Green Goddess fire engines from many miles away.
"This is a national dispute between the Fire Brigades Union and the employers, and the county council is powerless to affect these negotiations.
"It is clear the military support will be completely inadequate to cover the more rural areas of the county."
Councillor Claire Gordon said the fire brigade is significantly enhancing its fire safety advice during this period.
All householders will soon receive comprehensive advice on what to do in the event of fire. The council stressed the importance of people taking time to read the information carefully.
Those calling to raise the alarm during industrial action should dial 999 in the normal manner. The call will be dealt with as soon as possible.
Retained firefighters from operational stations or military units will respond to calls.
Somerset Fire Brigade has a Fire Safety Hotline which commercial premises and householders can ring for advice. The number is 01823 364507.
l During the dispute the military allocation will provide five Green Goddesses, three breathing apparatus teams, one rescue team.
The fire brigade's establishment of 568 staff will be covered by 160 personnel. Four senior fire officers will continue to work.
