This is a letter from this week's West Somerset Free Press, referring to a retrospective planning application for the memorial to Derek the Goose. You can read that story here.

We were really angry and upset reading the article in last week’s Free Press about Derek the Goose, saying Watchet could lose a memorial sculpture.

This one anonymous resident should be named. If planning permission was needed it could have been brought up during the campaign as I have kept all the Free Press articles about Derek. On September 16 2020 “Somerset West & Taunton Council” confirmed a memorial to Derek will be unveiled on October 2nd, so why now has Watchet Council objected?s

They should be proud of what the local people have done. Do they not realise that not only the local people donated towards Derek but people from all over the world who were also upset at his demise? When they visit Watchet again to see his memorial they do not want him hidden away, but in pride of place at the Harbour and the boats.

Mr and Mrs Wombwell
