This letter in this week's West Somerset Free Press tells how a simple act of kindness at the Apple Tree Tea Rooms in Minehead spread to others, and is a heartwarming story to renew your faith in human nature. This happened in Minehead recently, and this letter to you is to thank him, in case he reads it.
It was the day after Mothering Sunday, I am 91 and he looked about half that; it may be part of the story. Here is what happened. I went to the Apple Tree for a quick sandwich, asked a nice man (reading the Oldie) could I sit at his table, I didn’t disturb him.
He continued reading his Oldie while eating a large slice of cake and then we chatted briefly about The Oldie, and he paid his bill and my bill and left before I could thank him.
So I paid for the six-year-old’s cream scone at the next table and today when I met someone there this morning, the lady told me the parents of that child paid for a lady outside, and then that lady paid for another lady outside. We wonder if this went on further.
Someone told me about a café, either in Northern Ireland or Scotland, where you can pay for two meals and someone who is skint can have one for free.
