SIR — I read with regret that Mr Doar's application to thatch his existing combed wheat reed roof with a water reed has been rejected for the second time (Free Press February 26).
I directly overlook the roof of Mr Doar's listed property and for over three years have had a view of a thatched roof in urgent need of repair and which is now covered in protective sheeting - not a pretty sight!
If the roof is allowed to be replaced with water reed, no-one, apart from the experienced thatcher, would notice the difference.
It would still remain a thatched roof, protecting the interior of an old house presently unoccupied, in urgent need of refurbishment and which the owner is working to make habitable.
In addition, I am given to understand that water reed lasts longer than combed wheat reed and is less costly to maintain.
In my opinion the West Somerset Council planning committee was wrong in its decision to refuse this application and should reconsider in favour of Mr Doar and this should be done soon to avoid any further deterioration of this Grade 2 listed building.
