SIR — I attended the extraordinary parish meeting at St George's Church in Dunster last Friday at which a new churchwarden was elected before a debate on the proposed developments to the church.

The archdeacon presided over the meeting, always with a smile and a placating word, and although it was made clear that he did not want a discussion over ground that had been well gone over in the past, there were many point of view aired by many there who use the church for various events, bringing many into contact with the church - one reason for the proposed alterations.

There were many opinions given against the development in its present form, only three for it by my count, and it was pointed out that many of the events would be hard if not impossible to hold if the proposals went ahead.

I was heartened to hear that the archdeacon proposed developments be taken back to the parochial church council for further discussion.

He said that the objectors should come up with alternative proposals. Two have been mentioned as suitable sites - the Memorial Garden - using the boiler house as a base - and the south aisle and transept.

Either of these would seem to me to be far better, though I still hanker for the garden site.

The decision has not finally been made and objections can still be made to the diocese until November 22.

It seems that more weight is given to those on the electoral role and I would urge any who disagree with the present plan, villager or not, to look at the plans on view in the church and to write to the Diocesan Registrar, 14 Market Place, Wells, BA5 2RE or email [email protected]">[email protected].
