THE West Somerset Opportunity Group - praised by inspectors Ofsted for creating a place where children feel special - has secured a top award from the Government watchdog. The group, based in the new Alcombe Children's Centre since relocating from its Townsend Road base just over a year ago, has received the Outstanding Education and Care Award for 2005/ 06. Teacher in charge Judi Hayes represented the group at a special lunch in Bath's Guildhall where she was presented with the accolade by Christine Gilbert, Her Majesty's Chief Inspector and, with other award winners was thanked for her on-going hard work and commitment. The group, a charitable organisation caters for pre- school children with special needs across the West Somerset area. Its morning sessions are run alongside those provided by the Cheeky Cherubs Nursery, the partner provider in the Alcombe centre. The Ofsted inspection was carried out last April and the quality and standards of both care and education provided by the group was judged outstanding. Inspector Sara Bailey handed out 'very good' ratings for teaching, leadership and management, and partnership with parents. And she said the youngsters were constantly praised and encouraged, made to feel special and valued for who they were. "Children experience challenge in their play as staff are so aware of their development," said Ms Bailey in her report. And staff were found to be "dedicated and committed to the children's individual needs." The group is now included on the outstanding provider list for 2005/06.
