SIR — I understand that there have been alterations in West Somerset District Council's cabinet, but I doubt it will make any difference to their policies. The hiring of yet more consultants only goes to prove that they will only listen to those who they pay by way of fee. Tourism seems not to cross their minds at all, even thought two examples of that policy are on either side of them. Ilfracombe and Weston-super-Mare are both wedded to that policy. Some year ago Ilfracombe built an undercover entertainment centre to keep their town in business. Today we see Weston-super-mare about to spend millions of pounds on modernising their entertainment business. Why not the same for Minehead? Vulcan Road car park belongs to West Somerset District Council and it should stay that way. The way to use it is to lease it to some entertainment company for perhaps 30 years, then either renew the lease or put it out to tender. If there are no takers, the land will have increased in value during the period of the lease and could be sold as a last resort. At the moment though, what Minehead needs is something to increase visitor numbers. Losing a hotel a month cannot be allowed to continue as soon there will be no places for visitors to stay and the decline will soon become a disaster. Selling Vulcan Road car park will be a policy of short-term gain followed by long-term pain. The council should remember that it has a policy to encourage the West Somerset Railway to connect to Taunton. That connection will not only bring in more tourists but also provide a commuter service for the local population. Now that Cllr Hill has left the cabinet, perhaps the new cabinet might stir itself to use that policy. The cabinet might also listen to some of its backbenchers who will no doubt tell them how to fit all of their depleted staff onto the Williton site cheaply and in conditions that they so richly deserve.
