DULVERTON and Wiveliscombe each have one of three new deputy lieutenants for Somerset.

Lord Lieutenant for Somerset Lady Gass signed commissions for Captain William Canning and Mr David Wood, as well as Mrs Alison Crommelin, on Tuesday.

Captain Canning, who lives near Dulverton, has worked as an Exmoor National Park voluntary warden on one or two days a week for ten years.

It is one of many activities in which he had been involved since a distinguished career in the Royal Navy.

Mr Wood has been farming at Upton, near Wiveliscombe, since 1973 and was appointed a magistrate in 1980. He has since served on the Magistrates Courts Committee and was recently elected chairman of the Taunton Deane bench from 2002.

He previously held a commission in the Royal Marines and is a former chairman of governors at Brymore School. His many voluntary activities include being a churchwarden since 1975.

Mrs Crommelin is Mendip chairman of magistrates and her activities include over 20 years' work for the Pony Club.
