STANDING stones and burial mounds dating from the Bronze Age will help form the theme of year's Exmoor Archaeology Forum. The day of events which looks at the archaeology of the moor, now in its sixth year, is to be held on Saturday September 24 at Lynton Town Hall. The forum, organised by the national park authority, will focus on projects and fieldwork that have shed light on Exmoor's Bronze Age, roughly from 2000-1000BC. A series of brief illustrated talks will be given by those whose recent work has revealed new, relevant information. The social and climatic context of the Bronze Age in the South West will be explored and aspects of the archaeology of this period will be viewed through a series of recent and current projects. These projects include standing stones, burial mounds and the evidence for farming and settlement. Exmoor National Park Authority archaeologist Rob Wilson-North said: "One of the most surprising things over the last few years has been the frequent uncovering of new information about Exmoor's Bronze Age. "It was a time of huge change here, and we are only now beginning to understand what that really means. "I am looking forward to hearing more about this at the forum and would urge anyone interested what helped shape the Exmoor we see today to come along to what promises to be a fascinating day." The closing date for applications is Friday, September 16 and those attending should make their own lunch arrangements. There is a choice of venues in Lynton including pubs and tearooms or people are welcome to bring a packed lunch. The conference fee is £14 which includes morning coffee and afternoon tea, but not lunch. For further enquiries or a booking form contact Sue Parkman at Exmoor National Park Authority 01398 323665 or email smparkman@exmoor- nationalpark.gov.uk. A final programme, location map and list of places to eat will be sent out with confirmation of booking.
