RAIN and high winds may have cancelled the snow flurries planned to set the scene for the switch-on of Minehead's festive lights last Friday but the crowds still turned out in their hundreds for the traditional celebration.
Pop hearthrob Jimmy Constable from 90s boy band 911 braved the weather to flick the switch and give the town its seasonal twinkle, bringing his own touch of sparkle to the occasion.
And local chamber of trade chairman Marcus Kravis, who spent the evening in the town hall ensuring the streets resounded with Christmas songs, said the event could not have been better.
"It was a great success, even though we couldn't use the snow machine because it was too wet.
"There was plenty of entertainment and plenty of people out and about to enjoy it."
Traders were determined to put the recession on the back burner for one night and shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes took the opportunity to thank customers for their support and business over the past year.
Outlets in Friday Street and Park Street joined town centre businesses in the party atmosphere, with competitions and special offers, while shoppers were also able to check out the farmers market and a range of craft stalls.
Carol singing, a steam lorry, a pig roast, a Santa grotto and a host of festive fun added to the Christmas spirit.
The extravaganza was organised by Minehead Town Council's entertainments committee, with the support of holiday centre Butlins and the chamber of trade.
"The committee worked really hard to put on a fantastic event and we as traders are really grateful for that," said Mr Kravis.
"It's a chance for the shops and businesses to say thank you to their customers and it was a great night for everyone.
"Well done to all the traders who opened there doors and a big thank you to all the people who came along despite the weather conspiring against the event.
" The chamber looks forward to supporting next years event to make it even more memorable.
"On behalf of the Chamber of Trade, I would also like to wish Dunster and Dulverton good luck this weekend with their own events."
