A FAMILY-run West Somerset bakery business wants to continue its expansion plans by building a new unit on an industrial park in Williton.

Glenmore Bakery Ltd, which has premises in Williton and Minehead, currently employs about 50 staff and launched a recruitment drive for two more in December.

Now, the Jeromson family, who founded the bakery more than 30 years ago, have applied for planning permission for a 3,380 sq ft commercial/light industrial building on the Roughmoor estate, Williton.

The building would provide one large unit for the bakery business to use and two smaller ones which would be rented out to provide an income stream.

Planning agent Adam Elston, of Architectural Studio SW Ltd, said: “The proposed building would provide a positive contribution to the area by allowing the applicants’ successful business to expand further and provide two highly desirable commercial units for local letting.

“The proposed building would carefully replicate the scale and appearance of adjacent buildings and make good use of redundant space.”

Mr Elston said the site had vehicle access from Slade Way and was bounded with green painted metal fencing.

It was mostly laid to grass, with a single tree located in the northern corner of the plot which would have to be removed.

The site was surrounded by single-storey commercial buildings with a simple rectangular form and a dual pitch roof, although to the north was a red brick-constructed block of commercial buildings under a corrugated sheet roof, with large roller shutter doors.

The Glenmore building would be single-storey in red brick under a corrugated sheet roof with a dual pitch., and the footprint would be a simple L-shape.

Somerset Council economic development officer Hattie Winter said the plans represented a ‘meaningful opportunity’ to deliver new employment and skills opportunities and contribute to a thriving, resilient, and future‐ready local economy.
