A STOGURSEY father who took up sea-kayaking only a year ago is due in Watchet harbour tomorrow (Saturday) after an arduous journey from Cornwall.

John Harcombe, 47, a father of three, made the lone voyage to raise funds for research which could transform his young son’s life.

He left Bude on Tuesday after delays caused by gales and rough seas and has been paddling 40km a day along the hazardous coast.

He has been camping on the beach at night, reliant on the food and gear he carries in the tiny craft.

John hopes the trip will raise £5,000 towards the latest research into Crohn’s disease, a serious bowel disorder from which his 14-year-old son Alex has suffered for the past two years. There is, as yet, no cure.

“Since then, Alex has had to endure crippling pain, time off school and so many hospital appointments that I’ve lost count. He faces a lifetime of this until a cure can be found.”
