VETERAN marathon enthusiast John Lethaby is set to hang up his running shoes after more than 30 years of pounding the streets across the world.
John, a retired Exmoor National Park Authority employee, ran his first 26-miler - the prestigious London event - in 1980.
But at the age of 77 he is preparing to face his final marathon - his 80th - in Amsterdam.
"I shall still run but just not so far," said John, who lives in Minehead.
"The knees are going a bit and unfortunately the body just can't take the training any more."
John has run the London Marathon a total of 28 times and has travelled the world to take part in other events, from the USA and Mexico to most of Europe and the UK.
And he has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years.
"I've run in all sorts of weather - rain, snow, high winds," he said.
"I certainly won't miss the training but I will miss meeting people and seeing the sights of so many different places and countries."
John will face his last challenge on October 20 and he will be hoping to boost the funds of Cancer Research, a charity he has supported for many years.
Anyone wanting to sponsor him can contact him on 01643 702200.
