CHILDREN in Porlock reflected on their own good fortune while raising funds for research into genetic diseases.

The pupils of St Dubricious First School as well as the nursery and all the staff took part in national Jeans for Genes Day.

Even little Amber Nash, aged three, pictured in front of the queue, supported the cause while recovering from a broken leg.

Also pictured, from the front, are Jack Nash, aged three, Charlie Rook, aged five, Marni Toth, aged five, Donna Hooper, aged six, Alex Finnis, aged seven, Ian Moore, aged six, and Amy Stickley, aged eight.

Everyone paid a minimum donation of 30 pence for 'permission' to go to school in jeans and raised £53.

Teacher Julia Burt said: "We thought Jeans for Genes was a good way of making the children aware of how lucky they are."

l More than £100 was raised by West Somerset District Council last month when staff took part in Jeans for Genes Day.

Council chairman Cllr Jenny David said that, once again, staff had responded magnificently.

"Council staff have given their support each year and perhaps next year we will be able to make other local businesses more aware of the initiative and ensure a healthy contribution to those worthwhile charities from right across the district," she said.

Four national charities for children are set to benefit from the nationwide appeal which aimed to raise at least £2.5 million.
