SIR — The Friends of Williton Memorial Ground claim the village hall are misleading the public by describing the required access round the rec to the village hall site as a track (Your Letters October 9).

The village hall committee has always made it clear that access is required for the disabled and service vehicles and that access need not be tarmac but reinforced turf, preserving the 'green acres'.

Last year I showed Cllr Vaughan a piece of grass reinforced with a system designed to take the weight of a fire engine. Vehicles frequently use this grass. He could not tell where the edge of the track was.

The public can now judge who is misleading whom. At the entrance to the village hall site in the rec is a 50cm x 50cm sample of reinforced turf, designed to take the weight of a fire engine.

Such access improvement would also be useful for events on the rec and could provide an all-weather ambulance to air ambulance transfer point. I understand the air ambulance has used the rec.

Please note I write personally and not on the behalf of the village hall.
