HIGHWAYS engineers this afternoon reopened a main road into Wiveliscombe which had been closed since yesterday due to a dangerous build up of ice.
The B3227 New Road was shut close to bends known as ‘Devil’s Elbow’ after efforts to clear the ice failed.
Heavy and persistent rain set in overnight and temperatures rose, helping to clear the road.
Now, motorists are being warned to beware the rainfall, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning lasting from 6 pm tonight until 6 am on Tuesday.
More than six inches (150 mm) of rain could fall on high ground, but more widely between one and three inches (30-80 mm) was expected in most places inside the warning area.
A Met Office amber warning for ice also remained in place throughout Sunday despite temperatures expected to reach a high of 13C.
Met Office chief meteorologist Neil Armstrong said: “While the northerly airflow and cold conditions that have dominated our weather in recent days are coming to a close, there is a potent mix of wintery hazards on Sunday which has resulted in several warnings being issued.
“Within the amber warning area, freezing rain could lead to the build up of two to three millimetres of ice on untreated surfaces, which is likely to cause treacherous travel conditions and road closures.”
