SIR — We moved to Minehead when we retired a couple of years ago and have enjoyed many hours walking dogs for neighbours. We are lucky to have miles of local footpaths, many of which are livestock free. A favourite walk is along by the golf course all the way to Blue Anchor, and there is also Minehead bneach during the winter months. Many years ago, as a child, I was badly frightened by a small (but large to me!) dog jumping up at me and barking loudly. The owner told me not to worry as the dog was only wanting to make friends. Over 50 years on, I can still recall the terror I felt and even now hate unknown dogs of any size running towards me. Minehead beach must remain dog-free during the summer months when children should be free to run about and make a noise without being chased by an over excited dog "just wanting to make friends". It is not just faeces that will discourage parents from visiting our beautiful beach for a safe, family friendly holiday. Dog owners must accept that during the summer months, Minehead beach is for children to enjoy, whether or not they are used to dogs. Karen Jones, Minehead.
