A YOUNG Bateleur eagle has gone missing from the Exmoor Falconry and Animal Farm at Allerford. Shwala disappeared from the centre two weeks ago and is believed to have been sighted earlier this week over Chetsford Water. Centre owners Cathy and Glenn Powell are keen to immediately follow-up any possible sightings of the juvenile bird, particularly as Shwala has been used to help raise money for a community project in Gambia, West Africa. Mrs Powell said: "She is a young Bateleur, still with her brown plumage, and is very sadly missed by all of us and our visitors. "She was flown daily to visitors in order to raise funds for community work in the Gambia, West Africa, and since her disappearance fundraising has slowed down." Shwala is about twice the size of the UK's native buzzard and in flight has a very short tail, in contrast to the buzzard's quite distinctive tail pattern. "If anyone sees her on the ground she has very loose feathering around her head which makes her appear to have a coronet of feathers," Mrs Powell said. It is believed Shwala may have been spotted over Chetsford Water on Monday and the Powells are urging anyone who may have seen the bird to contact them as soon as possible. Mrs Powell added: "Any sightings will be followed up immediately by Glenn in the hope of her ultimate return to the farm. "We are asking anyone who thinks they have spotted her to please call either myself or Glenn on 01643 862816 as soon as possible after sighting her."
