AS the Great British Bake Off television show got underway this month, a group of young people from Watchet hosted a ‘Big Bake Sale’ to raise money for international charity Tearfund.

A wide range of homemade cakes, muffins, cookies and pies were on offer and the group raised a £305 for Tearfund’s work with some of the world’s poorest people.

The teenagers, who are all part of Watchet Baptist Church, organised the sale at The Sanctuary in Watchet, inviting friends, family and church members to join them in baking for a good cause.

Hannah Levett, 17, who co-ordinated the Big Bake, said: “It was a huge success and we are going to help improve many lives. Thank you to all who made and bought cake.”

A statement from Tearfund said: “Every pound raised makes a difference to people in huge need and fundraisers like this group bring hope where it’s needed the most.”

It gave the example of women living a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo who were facing a life of poverty until Tearfund enabled them to learn how to make and sell jam using local guava fruit.
