A VOLUNTEER scheme which monitors troublespots in Minehead by linking businesses by two-way VHF radio has been awarded a £3,000 grant by Somerset and Avon Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens.

“Since it was revamped five years ago, Minehead Town Watch has had a definite effect on crime and antisocial behaviour in the town,” said the organisation’s facilities manager and former chairman Richard Lillis.

“The PCC money is awarded to community-based projects which benefit the security of residents and we are delighted that our work has been recognised by the commissioner.

“The grant will enable us to update our equipment, extend the service and help make Minehead a safer place for residents, businesses and visitors.”

Mr Lillis said that currently 32 members, including shops, pubs and supermartkets, were linked by a two-way radio system which keeps everyone informed of outbreaks of crime or violence and allows them to be prepared for any impending trouble and identify offenders.

“Late-opening shops, bars and restaurants are particularly vulnerable and Town Watch not only helps our members but has the full support of the police.

“It has helped to solve numerous cases of crime and violence. We even caught someone wanted on Crimewatch!”

It is hoped that the PCC award will improve and extend the service, which operates from 8am until late seven days a week.

“We need more volunteers, particularly a communications officer to monitor the system and communicate with members,” Mr Lillis said.
