SIR — It would be good to think that the much-loved hymn 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' was inspired, as local tradition has it, by the heather-covered hillsides of Exmoor (A Word in Edgeways October 21).

But the Rt Rev Cecil F Alexander, at one time Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, would surely not wish to take the credit for his wife's creation.

Cecil Frances Humphries, who died in 1895, wrote not only All Things Bright and Beautiful but also "Once in Royal David's City' and 'There is a Green Hill Far Away', as well as many others contained in her book 'Hymns For Little Children', published in 1848.

It's really too bad if we women can't get the credit for our own work!
