Yeovil Mayor Julian Freke has sent a thank you letter to the teenage girl who captured a runaway horse in the town centre.

As previously reported, a horse escaped from a field in Stoford on October 30th and set off towards Yeovil.

The first sighting of the beast was made at the bottom of Middle Street.

Making the most of its freedom, the horse went up Middle Street, but was nearly hit by a bus.

When the animal reached Hendford and NatWest Bank, a group of people intervened.

Led by young Emma Gilroy, from Stoke-sub-Hamdon, the horse was brought under control and taken to the back of the nearby Mermaid Hotel, where police were called to try and find out where the animal belonged.

Yeovil Mayor Julian Freke heard about the incident and decided to send a formal letter in which he thanked Emma on behalf of the town and its residents.

The letter read: "I'm writing to congratulate you on your quick-thinking actions in recently helping to bring a runaway horse under control in the town centre.

"Your response undoubtedly helped to prevent an already potentially dangerous situation from escalating.

"On behalf of the people of Yeovil, I would like to thank you for your selfless actions."
