THE commitment and determination of seven West Somerset Community College students - past and present - was honoured at a special ceremony in Minehead.
The teenagers received their Duke of Edinburgh Gold awards at a local presentation last week, ahead of a trip to London for the national ceremony at St James' Palace.
Local leader Caroline Young said the college liked to "make a bit of a fuss" of its gold holders as it was such a huge achievement.
"It's nice for leaders and staff to catch up with their groups, having been with them through thick and thin for the three years-plus of their award programme," she said.
"It's also a good opportunity to say thank you to the parents for all the support they have given over the years."
The majority of the current batch of award winners took part in an expedition to the Picos de Europa in Spain last summer to complete their challenge.
Ms Young said: "Walking amidst the 3000-metre limestone peaks certainly opened their eyes to expeditioning in mountainous areas.
"All the groups coped well with the trials of the hot weather, lack of water and precipitous Cares gorge path."
For the other sections of the award scheme - skill, volunteering and physical recreation - the teenagers have undertaken tasks ranging from bike maintenance and first aid courses to archery and Rotary Youth residential stints.
"It is the consistent commitment they have shown to all these activities which makes the award so special and each of them so deserving of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award," said Ms Young.
Of the seven successful contenders, three - Alex Howes, Katherine Peeks and Josh Lee - are currently finishing their A level studies at the college.
Bryony Goddard has left the college, along with fellow former students Daisy Maddison and Liz Hobbs, who are now at university, and Alicia Hockin who is working at Yenworthy Lodge in Devon as an outdoor apprentice.
