THE first-ever Porlock Smugglers Run proved such a success that plans are already underway to make it an annual event. Sunday's event saw seven teams take part, carrying an empty beer keg across fields and the beach from Porlock to Porlock Weir, raising around £230 for the RNLI in Minehead in the process. Participants really got into the spirit of the event by wearing fancy dress and one of the race's founders Chris Gladstone said: "The feedback has been extremely positive. All the teams have told us they would love to participate next year and we've also had promises from other teams who'd like to join in, so we will definitely hold the event next year which is guaranteed to be bigger and better." Winners of the run were the Fast And Furious Smugglers, who completed the course in 11 minutes 13 seconds, closely followed by the Binge Britain A team in 11 minutes 15 seconds with the Budgie Smugglers coming in third in 12 minutes 10 seconds. The event was sponsored by St Austell Brewery which provided the main prizes and much-needed drinks at the Bottom Ship pub for all participants. More pictures in the Free Press.
