SIR — A collaboration between Watchet Town Council, the Royal British Legion and local residents has seen the project to design and fundraise for a war memorial commemorating the sacrifices made by so many achieve much over the past two years.

Over £2,500 has been raised so far by all means possible.

However, on delivering bags for a clothes and textile collection in the married quarters area of Watchet's old Doniford Camp, I realised that not many people are aware of the efforts being made.

Children at Knight's Templar School last year completed a project spearheaded by teacher Pete Stevenson and Major Robert MacDonald, our chairman, because our young people will be custodians of this project.

The shortlist of their designs has been available for residents to view at several events held in the Phoenix Centre and on the Esplanade, and they will also be on view at all future events we hold.

The consideration given to the subject by our young citizens was truly inspiring and has encouraged those of us actively working to raise the funds to deliver to the same standard.

The district council has given approval for the memorial to be sited next to our library by the cobble mosaic, which will allow for private and public commemoration and reflection in safety, with seating for the less able.

Please tell your friends about the project so that we have a higher profile amongst residents, as the funds raised will be going to provide a legacy for the future and remembrance of the sacrifices made by our forebears.

Watchet's thriving "Big Society" has some fabulous events arranged for the near future.

A celebration of 150 years of the Watchet railway station on March 31 will include a special train arrival at 9.30am, speeches, a brass band, a Victorian Market on the Esplanade with a bouncy castle for children and fundraising stalls including our Remembrance Project, tombola, raffle and name-the-cuddly-toy.

Two more dates for you calendar at which we hope to raise loads of money are May 5 at the town's football club, where a grand auction will be held with donations from diverse and eclectic donors from the world of politics, entertainment, sport, books, art, fabulous holidays and much more as welll as military items of memorabilia and antiques.

Then on September 8, the West Somerset Brass Band will be in concert at Danesfield School with accompanying choirs and hopefully comedians.

Look out for the posters and buy the tickets to help us raise the money to unveil in 2014 a fitting memorial to brave and frightened service personnel, many of whom were young boys, who deserve to be remembered.
