FAMILIES were encouraged to grab a map and a compass and make the most of the great outdoors as part of an ongoing project to keep West Somerset residents fit and healthy.
Members of the district's Living Well health initiative organised a family orienteering afternoon in the grounds of Dunster Castle on Saturday.
Participants had to navigate their way between control points marked on a special orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
Some 70 people rose to the challenge, with orienteers ranging in age from a tender three months to 63 years.
Such was the success, plans are already in the pipeline to hold regular orienteering challenges on the last Saturday of each month, with the next taking place on June 26.
Active 4 Living co-ordinator Mandy Godsell said: "Orienteering is a great way to get the family out and about in the fresh air while taking part in a fun activity together.
"All ages can take part and the kids love searching for the different points, so it's a great introduction to map reading."
The two-year Living Well scheme is supported by a raft organisations, including NHS Somerset, the Big Lottery, West Somerset Council and Somerset Leisure.
The aim is to help people grow their own food, cook nutritious meals and lead healthier lifestyles.
The project encourages residents to take part in healthy walks, sports and leisure activities and provides access to community allotment sites across the district.
