A FINE but cloudy day saw large crowds flock to the annual Exford Show last Wednesday. Trade stands, arts and crafts, a parade of hounds and children's entertainment were among the many attractions at the successful show. Visitors could find everything for the horse and rider to field glasses, clothing and footwear among the 30-plus trade stands, while Sally Davis ensured there was a wide selection of arts and crafts to be found in a dedicated marquee. Brenda Coats and the 'ladies of the hunt' had a successful local produce stall in their own marquee, while Alan Stapleton organised a Stags Horn Competition. One of the highlights of the day was a parade of the Devon and Somerset Staghounds with huntsman Donald Summerskill and his staff. The finale was the usual hotly contested inter hunt challenge for the Phillip Hawkins Salver, which was won by the Devon and Somerset Staghounds. The day also featured the Exmoor Pony Breed Show, which attracted some 106 entries. Competition was particularly fierce in the Olympia qualifier open ridden class, with the honours going to Dramway Miss Pippin, owned and exhibited by Marion Williams and Irene Nash from Weston- super-Mare. Wendy Vint from Wootton Courtenay took home several awards, especially with her yearling colt Dunkery Nuthatch. Sue Byrne took the NPS silver medal in-hand award with Tawbitts Bettina, as well as the title of moor bred champion in-hand. Mesdames Price and Please won the best moor bred ridden champion with their pony Tawbitts Mystic Maggie. The sheep show and horse event trophies were presented by Lady Margaret Fortescue.
