Rail enthusiasts and families are being invited to enjoy a spectacular three-day celebration at the West Somerset Railway this August Bank Holiday weekend, as the heritage line marks 65 years since some of Britain’s most distinctive diesel locomotives entered service.
Running from Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August, the “Diesel at 65” event will see five home-fleet locomotives take centre stage, with Class 09 D4107, Class 33 “Crompton” locomotives D6566 and D6575, and Class 35 “Hymek” locomotives D7017 and D7018 in action.
The Quantock Hills and West Somerset coast will echo to the sounds of Sulzer and Maybach engines as the locomotives operate an intensive special timetable. Visitors can expect single-loco workings, top-and-tail services and double-heading, offering plenty of opportunities to experience the sights and sounds of the diesel era.
A major highlight will be the return of Hymek D7018 to the railway following a period away. There will also be a rare chance to travel behind Class 09 D4107 on passenger services to and from Williton.
Adding to the atmosphere, a supporting steam service will recreate the railway scene of 65 years ago. The weekend will also celebrate 50 years since services returned to Washford, Watchet and Williton, with a special Saturday afternoon service between Minehead and Williton.
At Williton, the Diesel and Electric Preservation Group will host an open-yard event, with cab visits, shed tours, Rod’s Model Railways sales stand and refreshments from the Irie 7 van.
Meanwhile, Bishops Lydeard’s Gauge Museum will feature diesel-era exhibits, themed model railway displays and information about the locomotives being celebrated.
With heritage diesels, steam, museums and behind-the-scenes access, the West Somerset Railway promises a memorable Bank Holiday weekend for railway enthusiasts and families alike.
Timetables and tickets can be found at the railway website.
