ARTISTS are opening up their studios as part of a county-wide project to showcase art and its creators.

From September 13 to 28, 153 venues will open for open studios throughout Somerset.

Across Exmoor and the wider west Somerset area, there are 20 studios set to open including Dulverton Town Hall for an exhibition of Jim Starr’s work, showcasing large scale, experimental bird and wildlife paintings, prints, drawings, and illustrated maps.

In Bossington, Porlock Art Friends will be showing a range of mediums including photography, paintings, drawings, printmaking, textiles, and others, alongside images documenting the group’s working progress.

Three studios will open in Minehead, including Studio Cair Paravel for Amour Arbes by John Hailstone; Townsend House for ‘Earth, Pigment and Thread’ by artists Jill Davies, Georgina King, Gary Mills, and Linda Trump; and Leo Davey Studio/Galery for “dramatic, atmospheric” landscape paintings that focus on light and perceived space.

Along the A358, venues will open in Stogumber for a collection of Barry Hibbert’s work; in Crowcombe for Emma Duke’s sculpture and woodwork; in Bicknoller for a range of work by Annabel Gaitskell Anderson; and near Williton, for Janet Lawrence’s mixed media and watercolour paintings.

Watchet will be home to eight open studios ranging from Jenny Barron’s collection of watercolours to Jan Martin’s illustrated poetry and story books. East Quay Galleries on Harbour Road will play host to nine artists with an exhibition opening party on September 13.

Two venues will also open in East Quantoxhead featuring the work of Hazel Barron, Duncan Salisbury, and James and Alison Howson-French.

The Somerset Open Studios 2025 is a SAW (Somerset Art Works) organised event offering a 16-day celebration of artists and their studios.
