THE unique environment of Porlock Marsh will be among the highlights of an evening ‘Discovering Porlock’s Dynamic Coastline’ in Porlock Village Hall on Tuesday, August 4, at 7.30 pm, featuring guest speakers Nigel Hester and Shaun Davey.
The salt marsh covers 460 acres and became a site of special scientific interest in 1990.
Nigel worked for nearly 40 years for the National Trust, before retiring in 2018.
He moved to the Holnicote Estate in 1987, where he became countryside manager for the trust’s West Somerset properties, with responsibility for managing more than 14,000 acres of moorland, woodland, farmland, and coast, including the eastern half of Porlock Bay.
Nigel has extensive knowledge of the ridge and salt marsh and his presentation will trace the evolution of this special coastline, including the dramatic breach in 1996 and the subsequent development of a special, nature-rich landscape right on the doorstep of Porlock.
Local photographer Shaun Davey specialises in landscape photography, landscape astrophotography, drone photography, and videography.
After returning to Exmoor in 2013, he set out to capture the local landscape in a way which communicates the ‘feel’ of the subject as well as its appearance, giving a strong sense of ‘the place’.
He has a particular interest in capturing the beauty and variety of Porlock Marsh.
His work is regularly used by Exmoor National Park Authority, media organisations, and local businesses via the Exmoor Commons image library.
The event will complement a Porlock Marsh exhibition in the village’s Dovery Manor Museum, with some of the exhibits on display during the evening.
Food provided by The Porlock Vale Chef is included in the £5 ticket price and a bar will be run by The Top Ship.
