THE bellringers of St John the Baptist Church, in Carhampton, will be opening the tower to visitors on Saturday, September 19, as part of the annual Heritage Open Days national festival.

Visitors will be able to meet the bellringers and learn more about the art of bellringing, visit the ringing room, and see the six bells in the belfry, which were re-cast in 1928 by Gillett and Johnston, of Croydon

They can also see the historic peal boards on the walls and records of ringing events, have a partial view of the turret clock workings, which are located above the ringing room, and go up to the roof to enjoy views over the village, Exmoor, and Bristol Channel.

Access to the tower is via a narrow, stone spiral staircase and there are 80 steps up to the roof.

Children will need to be accompanied by an adult, and it is not considered suitable for ‘babes in arms’ or for toddlers, while large bags will have to be left at the bottom of the steps.

The tower will be open from 10 am to 12.30 pm and refreshments will be available inside the grade two listed 15th century church during a monthly coffee morning which is held there.

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, and happens across the country every year to allow people to visit public buildings which would not usually be open to the public.

Booking is not necessary and entrance to the Carhampton tower is free.

However, the organisers warned that if a large number of people arrived at any one time, then they may be asked to wait to ensure the tower does not become overcrowded.
