ONE of Minehead's oldest businesses is about to shut up shop for the last time. Hardware store Tarr and Foy, in Park Street, will close with the loss of eight jobs either on New Year's Eve or early in 2006. David Gliddon, whose family firm has had an involvement in the business since 1926, said the decision had been unavoidable. While he owns the business, the freehold of the property is owned by his cousin Ben Gliddon, who is believed to have sold it to local solicitor Julian Maitland-Walker. "It is a very sad day," said David Gliddon. "Our tenancy came to an end and the advent of internet shopping, Argos moving into the town and the impending arrival of the out-of-town retail park at Vulcan Road all had a bearing on the decision to close the business." Tarr and Foy moved to its present site in 1960 after the Gliddon family bought out Foy and amalgamated the two enterprises. The Tarr business, which was based in Friday Street, had been bought by the family in 1926. Mr Gliddon said the manager of the Minehead shop, Roger Webb, would be transferring to Gliddon's Williton store.
