FUTURE schoolfriends got together for an orienteering event at Dunster Castle before they come together as pupils of Minehead Middle School in September.

Over 120 children now at Exmoor Coast Federation First Schools were divided into 12 teams, with each team made up of children from the different schools – Cutcombe, Dunster, Exford, Minehead, St Dubricius, St Michael’s and Timberscombe First Schools.

The teams tackled orienteering courses that took them all over Dunster Castle’s grounds.

Before and after the orienteering – organised by 1610 – the children took part in a variety of team games before finally joining together for a giant picnic.

Suzanne Richards from 1610 said: “The morning went really well and all of the children enjoyed the challenge of tackling the orienteering course. It was lovely to see children from different schools working and playing together so well.”

It was one of a number of events provided by the Exmoor Coast Federation to help year four make the transition from first to middle school.

Earlier in the year, the children had joined year five at Minehead Middle School to put on a performance of songs from the musical Shrek.

Exmoor Coast Federation executive head and headteacher of St Dubricius First School, Christopher Blazey said: “I would like to thank 1610, Dunster Castle and the staff and parent volunteers from the various Exmoor Coast Federation Schools for helping us to provide this wonderful transition activity for the children who will be transferring to Minehead Middle School in September.”
