DUNSTER Country Fair, the largest of its kind in West Somerset, saw an action packed day on Wednesday (July 20) with an estimated 9,000 plus visitors.

They were offered everything connected with dogs, hounds, horses, ponies and country traditions and the event also attracted a record number of trade stands and crafts.

Now in its 39th year, the fair originally grew out of a donkey derby and is held on Dunster Castle Lawns with crafts and demonstrations including blacksmithing and thatching being held on the Village Green.

Main events included a Shetland Pony Grand National, a qualifier towards the Olympia London International Horse Show, and Hawkeye Falconry display plus equestrian events and a hound parade.

And, for the first time, the Dunster Country Fair crowd saw Stuart Barnes’ sheepdogs with ducks and geese.

There was also a large hound show, with 31 packs represented from all over the South West, the Exmoor Pony Society Show, the Minehead and District Canine Society’s annual dog show with hundreds of dogs.

Children were well catered for with a funfair and entertainments, and there was also plenty of food and drink on offer, with the ever popular luncheon in the marquee.
