AN 85-year-old villager has trekked round Williton with the aid of her walking frame to collect signatures for a petition against the dumping of carcases at Williton's Rydon landfill site.

Dorothy Webber spoke face-to-face with MP Tom King on Friday to air her concerns and has vowed to fight tooth and nail to keep the site clear of animals culled because of foot and mouth.

Mrs Webber, of Danesborough View, who suffers with chronic bronchitis and asthma, managed to collect 40 signatures on Saturday morning alone by visiting villagers' homes and local shops.

And she received offers of help with the cause by businesses willing to put her petition on display for customers to sign.

As reported in last Friday's Free Press, officials from the Environment Agency have suggested that carcases of culled animals could be buried safely at Rydon and MAFF officials have not ruled out the possibility.

Mrs Webber: "I was disgusted when I heard that it could be used as a possible site. We don't want it on our doorsteps, and that's what prompted me to go around to homes with a petition.

"I then met with Tom King on Friday lunch-time and had a word with him about the situation before I started collecting signatures. It was amazing because complete strangers were offering to help out with the petition."

Word of Mrs Webber's campaign quickly spread, and now the fight against West Somerset being used to transport dead animals to Williton is being supported in Watchet.

Operator Wyvern Waste is also strongly opposed to the use of Rydon landfill site for the disposal of slaughtered animals

Carcases have already been buried in landfill sites in Devon, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Mrs Webber has lived in Williton for the past 45 years, and this is not the first time she has campaigned in the village.

She championed for the zebra crossing in Fore Street, better street lighting in North Croft after a housing warden was attacked and new public toilets in the village.

"We will have to see what will happen because you can't win them all, but I am not going to sit down and just let this happen in our village," she said.

She will send the petition to Mr King's office at the House of Commons.
