FIREFIGHTERS from Minehead were called when a car caught alight in an Exmoor village on Thursday (August 6).

The blaze, which happened shortly after 1.30 pm, saw the vehicle severely damaged and about 30 feet of hedgerow in Conifer Close, Exford, was also burned.

The fire crews used a hose reel jet to put out the flames and a thermal imaging camera to check there were not any hotspots.

They also deployed an environmental pack to contain a diesel spill from the car.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “Each year, we help about 650 people whose vehicle has caught fire.”

They said most fires happened when a car was being driven, so vehicles should be checked before journeys and servicing and MoTs kept updated.
