VILLAGE hall campaigners in Williton are calling on local civic leaders to make a decision on a proposal for a joint building on the Memorial Ground. A 'planning for real' event on Saturday, staged by the parish council and aimed at discovering how people of all ages view the future of the ground, included a questionnaire by the village hall steering group on the possibility of building on the site. And spokesman Elizabeth Peeks said the results showed that 75 per cent of the 184 people who filled in the questionnaire were in favour of a village hall on the Memorial Ground. She said it appeared the way forward would be to combine much needed new or refurbished changing rooms with the hall scheme. "We believe a joint venture is what the public wants and we will be requesting the council to make a decision as soon as possible." A total of 137 people were in favour of a hall, with 44 against and three undecided. But the campaigners, who are likely to cause controversy with their request amongst hardened opponents of any large development on the ground, plan to repeat the consultation at the village fete in July. Mrs Peeks said that for the result to be credible it was necessary to have a response from at least ten per cent - around 250 - of Williton's population. She said that the information gathered would be passed on to the council, of which she is a member, to help a decision to be made. The council also had a questionnaire which attempted to gauge opinion on a broader range of issues, including how the ground could be improved and what additional sports it could host. Council chairman Cllr Eddie May said the results were still being collated but would be made public in time. He said the event had been a success and succeeded in getting people to the ground. "There were a few differences of opinion but on the whole it was a good day," said Cllr May. Pupils from St Peter's First School in the village took part in a drawing competition for ideas for the play area, judged by Cllr May and Cllr Tad Mandziej, who looked for originality and artistic quality. The prizewinners will be announced later this month. Cllr May said thanks were due to everyone who took part in the 'planning for real' day, including the village hall steering group, who provided refreshments, the New Leaf Christian Fellowshipµ, the Royal British Legion who displayed photographs of 'old Williton' and the Watchet Croquet Club, who staged a demonstration.
