aMORE than 1,000 people flocked to Allerford to sample a mixture of rural crafts and vintage vehicles. The Aller Vale Fete and Classic Car and Motorbike Show is now in its ninth year and the 2005 event proved as popular as ever. A range of stalls and attractions helped organisers raise an impressive £4,000 towards a £25,000 project for a new extension at the village hall. The development, which will include toilets for the disabled, could be in line for a Lottery grant. June Taylor, one of the organisers, said the fete had been a huge success. "It was a brilliant day and the weather was fantastic. We had 1,000 paying people through the gates and that didn't include the children, who came in free." The event is also the finishing point for Minehead Motor Club's 12th Classic Tour of Exmoor. A total of 108 classic cars set off from Watchet earlier in the day and completed either 100-mile or 60-mile routes before shipping up on the fete ground. Visitors were able to see a static display of some older vehicles, including the 1933 Austin Seven, pictured, with proud owner and enthusiast Ben Hammett of Porlock - who together won the event award for the highest combination of car and driver's ages - 143. Other award winners were: Best car, 1920s Tim Pearce (1924 AC Anzani), 1930s Bob Marks (1935 Morris 18/6), 1940s Ian Haddon (1945 Willey's Jeep), 1950s George Melville (1951 Lancia Aurelia), 1960s Royston Morgan (1965 Daimler 2.5), 1970s Bernard Scott (1972 Kharmann-Ghia), 1980s Phil Gannon (1987 Jaguar XJSC), 1990s Lisa Freegard (1992 Rover Mini Sprint), 2000s Seymour Hammett (2005 TVR Tuscan).
