Minehead Beach & Spring Clean Up

The spring clean up of Minehead Beach and the town centre is set to take place on Saturday, March 16 2024. Litter hotspots will be targeted on Minehead Beach and in the town centre itself.

Once the clean up event has come to an end, everyone will return to The Beach Hotel which is located on The Avenue street to sort out all of the collected litter. The sorting of the litter will allow it be recycled/disposed off in the correct way.

The mass litter picking spring clean is organised in partnership with the Severn Estuary Spring Clean. A health and safety briefing will first take place outside The Beach Hotel at 10:00am before litter picking commences.

Strong gloves, sturdy footware and waterproof clothing is recommended to bring with you. Litter pickers and sacks will be provided for the day of litter picking ahead. Every single piece of litter that is collected will make a huge difference to the local community.

It is also recommended to bring a rucksack with you, this is to hold essential items such as drinks, snacks, sunscreen and waterproofs.

Volunteer Bookshop Reopens

The reopening of the Watchet Community Bookshop is set for Saturday March 23, the shop will remain open until the end of October this year.

Volunteers run the shop entirely, and the shop relies solely on kind donations for its supply of books.

Funds raised at the shop go to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and to local good causes. As the books are donated it allows for up to 80% of its income to be donated.

Since the start of shop 15 years ago, it has raised and donated £165,000 the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and £80,000 donated as grants for local groups (Sea Scouts), and for sponsoring events (Watchet Flower Show).

Watchet Community Cinema

The French acclaimed film “Anatomy of a Fall” will be showing at Watchet Community Cinema on Friday, March 22.

Set in the recent past in the French Alps in a Chalet, near Grenoble, The film follows an investigation and trial of a female novelist who is charged with the death of her husband.

A female novelist, Sandra, her husband Samuel and their eleven-year-old partially sighted son Daniel, have been living secluded in the French Alps. Her husband Samuel is found dead, it is presumed murder and Sandra is treated as the main suspect. An investigation around the death of Samuel begins, and the film launches into an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel's conflicted relationship. Their son, Daniel, is caught in the middle of a trial, which takes its toll on their mother-son relationship.

Anatomy of a Fall has now gained two Golden Globes, and an Oscar for best original screenplay. The film has won the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or.

Somerset Place Names Talk

Tony Painter is to give an insightful talk on the fascination of place names in Somerset, exploring the thought provoking, beautiful, mysterious and amusing names of places in the region.

Most village and town place names around the country have a reason and can be explained, and Somerset is no different.

The community centre is delighted to welcome in Tony to Wiveliscombe and encourages you to come along to explore and unlock the secrets as to why villages and towns around Somerset are called what they are.

Tony will be explaining the naming of pubs, farms and fields as well.

Volunteers Tree Planting Day

Enjoy the great outdoors and help have a positive impact on the environment by volunteering to plant trees.

The Wood Advent Farm in Exmoor, is hosting a volunteers day of planting trees.

The day will begin with a welcome talk including a health and safety briefing, morning tree planting, lunch and then afternoon tree planting.

Wood Advent Farm, said: “Help us make a positive impact on the environment by planting trees and contributing to a greener future. This is a great opportunity to get outdoors, connect with nature, and meet like-minded individuals. No experience is necessary - just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands dirty!”

It is recommended that the appropriate clothing is worn, which includes wellies, warm and waterproof clothing that is appropriate for a British March day.

The Wood Advent Farm is asking volunteers to remember that the farm is located on a hill in Exmoor, and therefore fitness and mobility should be taken into consideration before participating.

To finish off the day and to replenish energy, afternoon tea and cake will be served before the day ends.

Join the Children’s Hospice Incredible Walk 2024

If you are looking for a challenge and to support a charity, this up-and-coming walk may be for you.

The ‘Incredible Walk’, organised and hosted by the Children’s Hospice South West will set out on a walking route between Minehead to Croyde for its 2024 fundraiser.

This is a three-day walk which is guided will take walkers across 60 miles of beautiful coastal countryside. Each year the charity picks up where it left off, walking the South-West Coast Path to raise money for young people and children living with limited conditions.

Sign up to take an incredible walk, taking in the breathtaking sights the South-West coast has to offer, whilst knowing you are support children and young people throughout the South West.

CHSW, said: “From the coast path’s official start point at Minehead, you will trek the rugged coastline of Exmoor, down to the scenic harbour village of Lynmouth, winding through idyllic coves and finishing in the seaside village of Croyde.”
