STUDENTS from the West Somerset Community College, in Minehead, will be officially launching their own-brand Fairtrade tea tonight (Friday) as part of a host of activities for Fairtrade Fortnight. College students have enlisted the help of local business Miles Tea to team up with a Ugandan Fair Trade tea grower to produce West Somerset Fair Trade Tea. College students welcomed Ugandan Fairtrade tea ambassador Silver Kasoro-Atwoki, the director of the Mabele Tea Growers Factory, to Minehead last year and are now planning to make a return visit to Africa in July. They will find out how their partnership is benefiting his community, through the provision of new facilities which have been provided through the premium paid on Fairtrade tea. The college is hoping local outlets will stock the tea and is already serving it in its own Fairtrade coffee bar. Students will be out in force tonight (Friday) in Minehead's Tesco supermarket to meet shoppers and promote awareness of the Fairtrade campaign. They will also be running a tea party in the bar at the Regal Theatre tomorrow between 2.30pm and 4.30pm to give people the chance to sample the tea. Cuppas will also be on offer during the college's forthcoming production of The Canterbury Tales which runs from March 6 to March 9. Fairtrade Fortnight will continue until March 11 with a host of other events planned, including Fairtrade coffee mornings and Traidcraft stalls in Porlock Methodist Church next Saturday (March 10) at 10am. Members of Minehead Youth Theatre will be in Minehead's Co-op supermarket tomorrow, with shoppers being offered the chance to win a hamper of Fairtrade goodies. Fairtrade will also be the theme of an evening of contemporary worship in St Michael's Church, Alcombe, on Sunday at 6pm.
