A CHILDREN'S nursery damaged by fire almost two months ago is celebrating its official reopening today (Friday).

Cheeky Cherubs is staging an open afternoon to mark its move back into its regular premises at Alcombe Children's Centre.

Although the nursery has been open for business since the fire in the kitchen area at the beginning of July, it has been based in temporary accommodation at the centre.

"We've been using the training room in the short term, for which we are very grateful," said a Cheeky Cherubs spokesman.

"But we're delighted to be back in our own home and the open afternoon is being held to thank everyone for their help and to show off the refurbished facilities."

The fire, which started in a cooker, severely damaged the kitchen but also left the nursery classroom badly smoke damaged.

"We've had to replace all the toys as the only ones that escaped smoke damage were those in the outside play area," said the spokesman.

"We've also had to carry out a complete refurbishment but we're just pleased that things are now back to normal."

Quick thinking staff evacuated the 27 children at the nursery on the day of the fire in just 38 seconds, winning praise from Somerset County Council officials, which leases the building from West Somerset Council.

The reopening celebrations will include a visit, fittingly, from children's television character Fireman Sam and will also feature arts and crafts sessions and other attractions.

The event runs from 2pm to 6pm and everyone is welcome.
