HOUSEHOLDERS are being encouraged to take advantage of the lighter evenings to check the security of sheds and outbuildings.
Avon and Somerset police have issued some tips designed to prevent people from falling victim to burglary:
* Burglars can use tools such as ladders to gain access to homes or sheds, so ensure they are stored away in a secure placeand out of sight.
* Do not leave a wheelie bin in a position where someone could use it to get over a fence or reach an open window.
* Cover garage or shed windows using curtains or frosted glass so contents cannot be seen.
* Fit a shed or garage alarm if possible.
* Permanently mark bikes and power tools with the postcode and register them for free at www.immobilise.com so that, if they are found, the police can reunite them with their owners.
* Use a ‘Sold Secure’ close-shackled padlock to secure a hasp and staple fitted with coach bolts or tamper-proof screws on the shed.
* Ideally, high-value bicycles and other items should not be kept in a shed or garage, but if this cannot be avoided, chain tools, cycles and other valuable equipment together using a high-security chain and a padlock. Anchor the chain into the wall or floor for extra security.
* When going away, ask a trusted neighbour or close friend to keep an eye on the property.
Anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously in the neighbourhood, or who believes a burglary is in progress, should call 999.
A burglary discovered after it has taken place can be reported to the police online or by calling 101.
