POLICE, coastguards and an army explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team were called to Lilstock beach on Sunday after a walker discovered what was claimed to be a Second World War bomb.

A coastguard spokesman said: "The fast incoming tide covered the projectile before the EOD team could get to the scene, so the area was cordoned off and the exact location of the object photographed and recorded.

"On the arrival of the EOD at the next low tide the object was confirmed as a wartime air-dropped projectile, unlike the normal tank or artillery items we often get asked to investigate and which have come from the nearby former military range.

"Deeming it as inert, the disposal team safely removed the object from the foreshore and returned to their Wiltshire base."

The spokesman added: "Remember, if you find anything suspicious on our beaches, don’t pick it up. Instead, record the location, take a photograph and inform the coastguard."
